TotalAV Settings

Issues with Real-Time Protection

Real-Time Protection runs in the background of your device and scans any file that you have downloaded, used, or opened. Real-Time Protection checks for virus-like behavior and will stop any suspicious activities, notifying you and stopping any files or malicious processes that could be harmful to your device.


Please carefully follow these steps to resolve the issue with TotalAV's Real-Time Protection before contacting our support department.

Uninstall Other Antivirus Applications

If you have other Antivirus Applications installed with Real-Time Protection, they will end up working against each other and Real-Time Protection will not work.

If you do not have any other Antivirus application installed go to step 5.

To remove any other Antivirus Applications

  • Open Windows Start Menu
  • Search for Add or remove programs
  • Go through the list and uninstall any other programs which are an Antivirus
  • Uninstall TotalAV

    Now we have removed other Antivirus Applications, we can also remove TotalAV temporarily.

  • Type TotalAV in your Windows search bar
  • Right Click the TotalAV Application
  • Click Uninstall

  • TIP: A new window should open with a list of applications.
  • Find TotalAV
  • Right click TotalAV
  • Click Uninstall / Change
  • Restart Your PC

    Restarting the computer at this point will allow your system to fully uninstall and clean up after removing any software.

    • Do this and continue with step

    Reinstall TotalAV

  • Click Here To Download TotalAV
  • Open the Downloaded File within your browser
  • Click Yes to allow TotalAV to make changes to your device

  • Click Install
  • Wait for TotalAV to Install
  • Wait for TotalAV to Update
  • Try enabling Real-Time Protection again. If it works, great! If not continue on.


    Uninstall Intel Rapid Storage

  • Open TotalAV
  • Click the Home icon
  • Click Uninstaller
  • Search for Intel Rapid Storage
  • NOTE: If you cannot locate Intel Rapid Storage move to step 9.
  • Tick the checkbox to mark it for removal
  • Click Uninstall
  • Uninstall TotalAV

    After removing Intel Rapid Storage, we need to also remove TotalAV temporarily.

  • Type TotalAV in your Windows search bar
  • Right Click the TotalAV Application
  • Click Uninstall
  • A new window should open with a list of applications.

  • Find TotalAV
  • Right click TotalAV
  • Click Uninstall / Change
  • Restart Your PC

    Restarting the computer at this point will allow your system to fully uninstall and clean up after removing any software.

    • Do this and continue with step .

    Reinstall TotalAV

  • Click Here To Download TotalAV
  • Open the Downloaded File within your browser
  • Click Yes to allow TotalAV to make changes to your device
  • Click Install
  • Wait for TotalAV to Install
  • Wait for TotalAV to Update
  • Try enabling Real-Time Protection again. If it works, great! If not continue on.


    Check Windows Defender is disabled

    On most modern-day Windows devices, Microsoft Defender will come preinstalled. Microsoft Defender will end up causing conflict with TotalAV and we would recommend disabling it. To disable Microsoft Defender follow these instructions:

  • Click the Windows icon/Start button
  • Click the Settings Cog

  • Click Update & Security

  • Click Windows Security
  • Click Virus & Threat Protection

  • Locate Microsoft Defender
  • Toggle Off Periodic Scanning

  • Try enabling Real-Time Protection again. If it works, great! If not continue on.


    Uninstall Intel Rapid Storage

  • Open TotalAV
  • Click the Speedometer Icon
  • Click Application Uninstaller
  • Click Start Scan

  • Locate the Intel Rapid Storage application
  • Click the check box on the right-hand side
  • Click Uninstall Selected

  • Uninstall TotalAV

    After removing Intel Rapid Storage, we need to also remove TotalAV temporarily.

  • Type TotalAV in your Windows search bar
  • Right Click the TotalAV Application
  • Click Uninstall
  • A new window should open with a list of applications.

  • Find TotalAV
  • Right click TotalAV
  • Click Uninstall / Change
  • Restart Your PC

    Restarting the computer at this point will allow your system to fully uninstall and clean up after removing any software.

    • Do this and continue with step .

    Check Windows Defender is disabled

    When you first install TotalAV on Mac, you will need to set up Real-Time Protection. We have made this as simple as possible. To enable Real-Time Protection follow these instructions:


    Open TotalAV

    Open the TotalAV Application

  • Click Dashboard
  • Click Enable
  • Click Install
  • Open System Preferences
  • Allow Permisions

  • Click Open Security Preferences
  • Click the Lock Icon
  • Enter your Mac's Password
  • Click Unlock
  • Click Allow
  • Enable Real-Time Protection

    Go to the TotalAV Application


  • Click Next > Open System Preferences
  • Click TotalAV Real-Time Protection 5
  • Click Complete Setup
  • Error Codes:

    This error typically occurs when an older version of TotalAV was previously installed on your Mac, and an attempt to update to the latest version fails. This can sometimes be caused by a permissions issue within your system.

    To resolve this error and successfully enable Real-Time Protection, please follow the steps below.


  • Close TotalAV Completely - Click the TotalAV icon in the top menu bar (near your clock). - Select Quit or Exit TotalAV.
  • Open Finder - On your desktop, click the Finder icon in the dock.
  • Access the Library Folder - From the top menu, click Go. - While the Go menu is open, press and hold the Option (Alt) key. - Click on Library when it appears in the list.
  • Navigate to the TotalAV Folder - Go to Application Support → net.protected.macos.TotalAV → libs
  • Full file path to copy here: ~/Library/Application%20Support/net.protected.macos.TotalAV/libs
  • Delete the libs Folder - Right-click the libs folder and select Move to Bin (or Trash).
  • Empty the Bin (Optional but Recommended) - Right-click the Bin/Trash icon in your dock. - Select Empty Bin/Trash.
  • Re-launch or Reinstall TotalAV - Try opening TotalAV again.
  • If the issue persists, please uninstall TotalAV, then reinstall the latest version from your Total Security Dashboard.
